Reading Assessment for Years 7 to 10

As part of Countesthorpe Academy’s continued commitment to Literacy, all students in Years 7 to 10 will be taking part in a calendared reading assessment week beginning 1st March, during one of their live English lessons.

The STARR Reader test gives us an understanding of the current picture with your child’s reading. It is not a test which requires revision or preparation.

It is possible to take the test on a number of different devices. Students will be instructed in the lesson, by their English teacher about what to do. All students have taken the test before in school, so the procedure and test will be familiar to them.

We thought it might be useful to be aware of the following information which will be explained to your child in the lesson in which they take the test:

  • Do not talk to anyone
  • Do not ask for help
  • Try and focus on the test without distractions
  • Do not guess an answer. If you do not know, wait for the question to time out and move on

All of the above are really important in getting as accurate a picture as possible of your child’s reading at this point.

The test should take at least 20 minutes and may take up to 45 minutes. It is important not to rush.

We are fully aware of the challenges of remote learning and the above is for information only. We also understand pressure on devices and space in homes. There is no expectation for you to supervise or intervene in anyway. We do want students take the test seriously as we want to make sure that the right students get the right support, but we do not want to raise anxiety levels. We will use the information we gather from the test as part of a broader range of measures to help support students when they return to school.

Best wishes,

Countesthorpe Academy Literacy Team
