Film Club

It is universally accepted that encouraging children to read books both for enjoyment and for critical understanding has huge educational benefits. The same is true for films; perhaps even more so, given there are so many different elements in addition to the language and narrative structure that are involved.

Film Club is an extended school activity that is both educational and enjoyable. The aim of Film Club is to bring the world of cinema into schools in a UK-wide network of After School Clubs. Students have the opportunity to meet weekly and watch a film together, either a recent release or cinema classic.

The focus is on the personal inspiration and entertainment which watching films can offer, as well as discovering and learning more about films in an informal social setting. It is a child-centred process, designed to stimulate discussion between staff and students. Film Club has been running very successfully for nine years and we hope to continue this tradition this year. Film Club starts on Friday 22nd September 2017 and the film will be announced nearer the time.

Membership is invited now. As numbers are limited those students who do not receive a place will be put on a waiting list. Membership is free. However, an annual charge of £2 is required to cover administration costs. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase before the film to enhance the experience.

Typically, Film Club will finish at 5.15pm, but occasionally the film may require a little longer, and members will be advised in good time if this is the case. Students will receive an email on a Monday with the information for that Friday’s film. Posters are also in both buildings with this information on. It is important to note that there is no After School Bus on Fridays. Parents will, therefore, need to make alternative arrangements if appropriate. As the CLCC reception is only open until 4pm, we now have a school mobile phone that Mr M Chessell has with him during Fridays so if you have any Film Club queries or issues please contact him on the following number 07773 071283.

As Film Club has become more established, greater control has been passed to the members for choosing films, promoting the club within school, writing reviews and actively participating on the official Film Club website. As a result, it was decided during its first year to allow 12 Certificate films to be shown in addition to the U and PG ones already being watched. Not only does this dramatically extend the choices available, it also encourages continued membership of older students who might otherwise consider the existing film choices a little young for them over a prolonged period of time.

Obviously, we need parental consent to allow 11 year old students to view a 12 film. Please indicate your preference on the consent form. Should consent not be received, your child will not be allowed to attend Film Club when a 12 film is being shown, but will still be able to attend when a U or PG film is being shown.

If your child is interested, please complete and return the attached consent form in an envelope. Mark the envelope with your child’s name and tutor group, and return to Mr M Chessell in the Design Office at the Leysland building as soon as possible. Payment can be made using our online payment system Parent Pay.

If you have any queries please contact Mr M Chessell, Film Club Coordinator, on the CLCC phone number. Yours sincerely
